Decreasing while maintaining edge stitch(es)

Decreasing with 1 standing edge stitch or more means decreasing 1 stitch or more in from each edge. This makes the edge stitches easy to pick up and leaves a smooth edge for seaming.

1 STITCH AT EACH EDGE: Work a single decrease over the second and third stitches from each side. The third stitch is facing (on top of the second stitch).

The edge stitch is difficult to stretch, making it ideal for seaming, and the position of the decreased stitch is not conspicuous. There are 2 ways to chart this method, but the knitting is the same.
