Country Quilt Block Pillow
Tricot / Knitting

A traditional quilt block inspired the motif for this throw pillow.

Use the intarsia technique to translate one needle art into another!

NOTE • To increase stitches, use M1-R and M1-L.

Make One Increase (M1, M1-L, or M1-R)

This method of increasing is the most invisible and perhaps the most useful one to have in your knitting repertoire. It can be made to slant toward the left (abbreviated M1-L) or toward the right (abbreviated M1-R). If the slanting direction is not specified, use the increase that slants left.

Used in combination, left- and right-slanting stitches can create beautiful, symmetrical sleeve increases.

To Make One slanting to the left (M1-L), use the left-hand needle to scoop up the horizontal strand between the needles from front to back and knit the strand through its back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole in your fabric.

To Make One slanting to the right (M1-R), use your left-hand needle to scoop up the horizontal strand between the needles from back to front and knit the strand through its front loop, twisting it to prevent a hole in your fabric.

Cable Cast-On

This particular cast-on is my favorite cast-on technique: It’s beautiful, quick, and easy to do. Plus, it’s perfect when the first row worked is a right-side row.

Begin by making a slip knot on your knitting needle, then insert the tip of the right-hand needle knitwise into the loop that’s sitting on the left-hand needle and knit a stitch (illustration) but don’t remove the original stitch from the left-hand needle, instead, transfer the new stitch from the right-hand needle back to the left-hand one.

One new stitch has been cast on. For each successive stitch to be cast on, insert the tip of the right-hand needle between the first 2 stitches on the left-hand needle to knit a stitch (illustration).

As before, do not remove the old stitch, but slip the new one back to the left-hand needle, repeat until you have cast on the required number of stitches.

Back

With A and using the cable cast-on method, cast on 82 stitches.

Set-Up Row (RS):

Work Row 1 of the Right Side chart (Rows 1–60) across the first 41 stitches,

place a marker,

work Row 1 of the Left Side chart (Rows 1–60) across the last 41 stitches.

Continue working both charts side by side until Row 120 is completed.

Bind off.

Front

Work the same as for the Back.

Finishing

Weave in all remaining yarn tails.

Block the pieces to the finished measurements.

With A, sew 3 of the side seams.

Insert the pillow form.

Sew the remaining side seam.

BORDER

With the right side facing and A, pick up and knit 82 stitches along one side of the pillow.

Knit 3 rows with A,

2 rows with D,

4 rows with C,

and 3 rows with A, and at the same time, increase 1 stitch at each side on every right-side row as follows:

K1, M1-R, knit to the last stitch, M1-L, k1— 94 stitches total when all increases are complete.

Next Row (WS):

With A, bind off knitwise.

Repeat the border along each side of the pillow.

With the right side facing, sew the mitered corners of the border together.
