5 sts = 1” in stockinette stitch on US 8 needles or size necessary to obtain given gauge.

Spiral Rainbow Hat – Version 1
Make a provisional cast on of 70 sts.
Work 2 rows stockinette stitch.
*Work 4 rows reverse stockinette.
Work 4 rows stockinette stitch.
Repeat from * 16 times.
Work 4 rows reverse stockinette stitch,
work 2 rows stockinette stitch.
AT THE SAME TIME increase 1 st at beginning of every right side row and decrease 1 stitch at end of row.
Kitchener stitch cast on edge to last row using yarn needle.
This will form a tube.
Using a length of yarn, gather one end to form the top of hat.
Secure tightly.
Spiral Rainbow Hat – Version 2
Make a provisional cast on of 70 stitches.
Beginning with a WS row, work 3 rows stockinette stitch.
* Work 6 rows reverse stockinette.
Work 6 rows stockinette stitch.
Repeat from * 10 times.
Work 6 rows reverse stockinette stitch, work 3 rows stockinette stitch.
AT THE SAME TIME, increase 1 st at beginning of every right side row and decrease 1 st at end of every right side row.
Kitchener stitch cast on edge to last row using yarn needle.
Sew up top of hat as in version 1.
